Rhodes Scholarships at University of Oxford- 2022/2023 [Updated!]

The Rhodes scholarships are offered to international students who intend to pursue a master’s degree at Oxford University UK for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Rhodes Scholarship grants the recipient a living scholarship (£ 15,144 per year), all university and college fees and university application fees. A class of 100 scholars is selected each year from over 60 countries around the world.

The scholarship is not just a financial scholarship but is a life-changing opportunity for exceptional young people with the potential to bring about change for the better in the world.

About the scholarship

Rhodes Scholarships, an educational grant for the University of Oxford established in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes for the purpose of promoting unity among English-speaking countries.

Scholarship requirements have been amended over the years, and by the beginning of the 21st century students from all countries were eligible.  Scholarships last for two years, with a third year at the discretion of the trustees.

The Global Scholarship Selection Committee in Rhodes is looking for outstanding young leaders who are motivated to engage in global challenges and promote international understanding and peace.

In short, the selection committee is looking for young people with exceptional intellect, character, leadership and commitment to service, and exhibits a strong tendency to be revealed as “leaders for the future of the world.”

Benefits

  • Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University fees (and colleges) as well as providing an annual scholarship. The grant will be £ 15,900 per year (£ 1,325 per month) from which scholars pay all living expenses, including housing.  Please note – this is not enough to cover affiliates or dependents.
  • Once the scholarship is selected, the Rhodes Trustee will cover the required fee for applying to study at Oxford University. The trust will cover the fee for a Grade 4 study visa and related International Health Insurance Scheme (IHS), which allows international students access to the UK National Health Service.
  • Rhodes Loyalty will cover two economy class flights – to and from the UK – to start and end at Oxford.
  • Upon arrival in Oxford, scholars receive a settlement allowance (£ 225 in 20-20). For those researchers who take the second course of study at Oxford, they will again receive assistance in covering the fee for renewing the visa and applying to the IHS.
  • A number of research grants are also available to Rhodes researchers, on request, allowing researchers, for example, to attend international conferences or perform additional fieldwork.

 

Eligibility Criteria for Rhodes Scholarships at University of Oxford

To qualify for the Rhodes Scholarship, the candidate must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Citizenship and residency: Each candidate must fulfill the citizenship and residency requirements of the district of Rhodes to which he or she is applying. Check out the eligible countries here.
  • Education: All applicants must achieve a bachelor’s degree with honors by October. Also, academic standing must be high enough to ensure admission to Oxford University, which has very competitive entry requirements.  In Canada, a GPA of at least 3.75 / 4.0 or equivalent is expected.
  • Age: Age restrictions vary between constituencies and range from a minimum age limit of 18 to a maximum of 28 to October 1 of the year following the election. In most elections, the age limit is 24 or 25. Please carefully check the specific age requirements for your constituency before applying.  Successful candidates will arrive in Oxford in October following the selection process.  The scholarship cannot usually be rejected.
  • Required language: English

Supporting documentation for Rhodes Scholarships

For detailed application requirements for each constituency, please visit the country pages using country links.  In broad terms, all constituencies will require the following materials in different forms:

  • Evidence of registration / academic transcript (complete or in progress) of a bachelor’s degree and all studies for a master’s degree
  • Resume / CV or list of main activities
  • A statement or personal essay (including, crucially, a clear statement as to what the applicant is interested in studying at Oxford and why)
  • Age testimony / birth certificate / passport
  • Proficiency in English (when English is not the first language)
  • Photo
  • A list of judges (usually several are required) who can testify with confidential references about the candidate’s character and intellect, including academic, personal, extracurricular and leadership achievements (and which should never include people to whom you are related)

Eligible students wishing to receive a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University, one of the UK’s leading universities, must apply online.  The application process for it is mentioned below:

  • Sign up and create an account on the Rhodes Trust website.
  • Fill out the scholarship application form for Rhodes
  • Submit personal details along with the list of required documents.
  • Submit the application package before the deadline.
